The river Clyde is the eighth longest river in the UK, the river was used for harnessing power to run mills until the 18th century in its history. It stretches through the towns of Lanark, Hamilton and Motherwell and artificially widened to form a lake at the Strathclyde Park, through Uddingston, Rutherglen before into the Port and City of Glasgow.
During the Industrial Revolution the Clyde River served many purposes, as it was straightened and widened, many ship building companies were built on the Clyde. Cotton and Tobacco products were shipped to the Americas and the far East. There are about 72 bridges on the Clyde serving roads, rail and foot crossings. The river then stretches to through Port Glasgow and Greenock.
